How bamboo becomes a high-performance paddle.

The bamboo that ends up in a Kinova paddle does not go from forest to factory in one step. Between a living bamboo culm and a finished, tested, court-ready paddle face lies a manufacturing process that is more sophisticated than most players realise — and understanding it helps explain why engineered bamboo performs the way it does.

It Starts With the Culm

Not all bamboo is suitable for high-performance engineered products. Species matters. Moso bamboo is among the most widely used for engineered products because of its size, fibre density, and mechanical properties. Age matters too — culms harvested too early have immature cell walls and weaker fibre, while overly mature culms can become brittle. Diameter, wall thickness, node spacing, and moisture content all affect the quality of the finished material. A serious bamboo paddle manufacturer specifies these parameters at the sourcing stage.

From Culm to Strip

Once harvested, culms are cut to length and split longitudinally into strips. The outer skin and inner pith are removed — the outer skin is too smooth and waxy to bond well, and the pith is soft and low-density. What remains is the structural wall, rich in the vascular bundles that give bamboo its mechanical properties. The strips are then planed to precise dimensions and dried to a target moisture content. Controlling moisture is critical: bamboo is hygroscopic, and variations affect both the bonding process and the dimensional stability of the finished product.

Layup and Bonding

With strips prepared and dried, the layup process begins. Strips are arranged in a chosen orientation, adhesive is applied between layers, and the assembly is pressed under controlled pressure and temperature. Bamboo is highly anisotropic — its properties differ significantly parallel and perpendicular to the grain — which means layup orientation is a genuine design decision. How the fibres are aligned determines how the paddle face responds to impact, how stiffness distributes across the surface, and how consistent the feel is between the sweet spot and the edges. Adhesive choice matters for both performance and sustainability: a responsible manufacturer considers low-emission or bio-based options where possible without compromising durability.

Laminated Bamboo vs Bamboo Scrimber

It is worth distinguishing laminated bamboo from bamboo scrimber. Laminated bamboo uses strips or veneers in controlled orientations, offering predictable, directional properties and relatively controlled resin content. Bamboo scrimber uses more heavily crushed or fiberised bamboo bundles pressed at higher pressures. Research suggests the higher surface area of crushed bamboo in scrimber production can require significantly more resin — in some cases six to ten times more than laminated bamboo. For a brand focused on reducing material impact, this is a meaningful consideration.

From Material to Paddle

Once the laminated bamboo sheet is produced, paddle manufacturing adds further steps. The bamboo face layer is bonded to the core — typically a polymer honeycomb structure — under controlled conditions. Edge protection is applied, handle and grip components are assembled, and the surface is finished to provide the playing characteristics and durability the paddle needs. The surface finish is particularly important: bamboo requires appropriate texture, coatings, and protective finishes to perform consistently across different playing conditions and over extended use.

Compliance testing follows: every paddle intended for USAP-sanctioned play must meet equipment standards including specifications for deflection, surface roughness, and overall dimensions. This is where materials engineering meets official sport.

Why the Process Matters

When a player holds a Kinova bamboo paddle, they are not holding raw bamboo. They are holding an engineered system — bamboo fibre architecture, controlled bonding, precision layup, protective finishing, and tested construction — that happens to be built from one of the most sustainable raw materials available. The process is what makes the performance possible. And understanding it is what separates a bamboo paddle from a bamboo paddle made properly.
